As the T.C. Williams High School basketball team has continued to win this season, anticipation for the clash with national power Montrose Christian has grown. The atmosphere in The Garden was electric last night: the drum line was there; the cheerleaders were full of energy; and the Fightin’ Titans were clad in black shirts and beat ferociously on their thunder sticks. Everything was just right for an exciting contest and then the game began.
The end was never in doubt from tip to finish. The closest the Titans came was 4-2, and that was very early. The Mustangs out scored the Titans 24-9 in the first quarter, 12-9 in the second and 17-13 in the third. T.C. outscored Montrose Christian, 15-14 in the final period, but it was far too little too late. The final score was Montrose Christian 67, T.C. 46.
The Mustangs’ scoring was balanced, with all five starters contributing. The Titans, on the other hand, had only one player who scored in double digits, senior center Billy Rowland with 12 points. Senior forward Ryan Yates contributed 9 points, followed by senior guards Darius Porter and Cortez Taylor, junior center Jay Whitmire, and sophomore Daquan Kerman each with four points. The Titans played hard until the end against a very talented opponent. The loss brings T.C.’s overall record to 10 and 2, and they remain undefeated in Patriot District play. The Titans return to district competition on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at home against West Potomac. Game time is 7:45 p.m.
