Torpedo Factory Art Center Hosts Regional Launch Event For Minds Wide Open Statewide 2010 Arts Celebration

The Torpedo Factory Art Center invites visitors to celebrate the launch of Minds Wide Open, a statewide celebration honoring contributions by women to arts and culture. The Torpedo Factory will host the regional launch event for Northern Virginia, and the evening will feature special speakers, receptions for exhibitions featuring women artists, and modern dance performances. This event will take place during the Torpedo Factory’s Second Thursday Art Night. Studios and galleries will be open until 9pm and visitors are invited to mingle with artists as they enjoy refreshments.

Lawyer Pleads Guilty To Laundering Drug Money For Arlington Meth Ring

Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery has scheduled an exhibit PastForward from February 27-March 28 as part of Virginia’s 2010 statewide celebration featuring women in the arts.

MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts will include thousands of special events and programs offered between March and June of 2010.

Culpeper Man Sentenced 27 Months For “Granny Ripping” Schemes

Donald Ray Norcross, 26, of Culpeper, Va., was sentenced today in Alexandria federal court to 27 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for targeting vulnerable elderly homeowners and defrauding them of tens of thousands of dollars through bogus repairs and services. He was also ordered to pay $27,100 in restitution.

Capital Beltway Inner Loop Lane Shift To Occur February 26-27

Motorists traveling on Interstate 95/495 South (the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway) should prepare for minor traffic impacts the night of Friday, February 26, into Saturday, February 27, as the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project plans to shift lanes and close ramps between the Eisenhower Metro Overpass and the Beltway bridge over Cameron Run. The shift will allow crews to prepare for upcoming construction in the Telegraph Road corridor of the Capital Beltway

School Board Makes Up For Lost Time

The Alexandria School Board voted 8-1 to add 10 minutes to the beginning and 20 minutes to the end of each school day to make up lost instructional time missed because of snow. Elementary schools will open at 7:50 a.m. and dismiss students at 2:55 p.m.; middle school students will begin their day at 8:20 a.m. and finish at 3:30 p.m. and high school students will start at 8:25 a.m. and be dismissed at 3:35 p.m. The new schedule will begin on March 8, continuing until June 4.

Moran Votes To Strip Anti-Trust Exemption For Health Insurance Industry

Today, Congressman Jim Moran hailed the House’s passage of legislation spearheaded by Virginia Congressman Tom Perriello to foster increased competition among health insurers and lower premiums for consumers. H.R. 4626, the Health Insurance Industry Fair Competition Act, will repeal the special anti-trust exemption for the health insurance industry. The legislation prevailed on a 406 – 19 vote.
