Keeping you informed about happenings around Alexandria City Public Schools

“Children learn more from what you are than what you teach,” said African-American educator, author and civil rights leader William Edward Burghardt “W.E.B.” DuBois, born on this date in 1868. DuBois, who helped found the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) in 1909, died the night before Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, D.C., in 1963. Rescheduled Open Houses

The following ACPS elementary schools rescheduled their kindergarten open houses and/or tours because of snow days:

John Adams Elementary School, 5651 Rayburn Ave., Alexandria, 703-824-6970 — An open house will take place at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 5. Tours are available by appointment on the first Friday of each month.

Cora Kelly School, 3600 Commonwealth Avenue, Alexandria, 703-706-4420 – The kindergarten open house will be at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26.

Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics, 1501 Cameron St., Alexandria, 703-706-4400 — An open house will take place at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 5. Tours are offered by appointment upon request.

Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy, 530 S. St. Asaph St., Alexandria, 703-706-4430 – No official open house is being planned at this time. The school has sent information packets to all pre-registered participants for the two previously scheduled open houses.  Tours will be conducted on an “as requested basis.”  Interested parties can contact Nicole Dickens at 703-706-4430.

Mount Vernon Community School, 2601 Commonwealth Ave., Alexandria, 703-706-4460 — An open house will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25.

Senior Internships

Don’t forget that the Senior Experience Parent Night will take place at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the T.C. Williams High School auditorium. Seniors who have their verified credit for graduation, are passing all of their classes and have good attendance and behavior may be eligible for the Senior Experience Program. AVID Information Night

Here’s a reminder for parents to attend the annual Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Parent Information Night on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at T.C. Williams High School’s auditorium. Students currently in grades six through nine with grade point averages of 2.0 to 3.5 may be eligible for the AVID program for the 2010-2011 school year. Camp Fair

Check out a wide variety of summer camps at the 2010 Summer Camp Fair sponsored by the PTA Council of Alexandria, Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Minnie Howard campus of T.C. Restaurant Fundraiser

If you are tired of being cooped up and cooking after so much wintry weather, join friends and classmates at Chicken Out Rotisserie at Bradlee Shopping Center for dinner on Thursday, Feb. 25. The restaurant, at 3644 King St., will donate to the Maury PTA 20 percent of the proceeds from dine-in and carry-out orders placed from 5 to 8 p.m.
