While most Alexandria City Public School children were sleeping late last Friday, ten fourth and fifth-graders at Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy had the opportunity to question Cabinet officials about childhood obesity.

Good Morning America taped a show on First Lady Michelle Obama’s new Childhood Obesity Initiative, which she announced at the Alexandria YMCA on Jan. 28. The show, which was moderated by GMA’s pediatrician Dr. Richard Besser, included U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, U. S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

When LCTA Principal Patricia Zissios learned that GMA was coming to the school, she asked any fourth or fifth grade student who wished to participate to submit a question they would like to ask one of the cabinet members. GMA producers selected the questions. On Friday, those students, two LCTA parents and Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille met in the library for the taping.  The show will air on ABC Channel 7 on Wednesday, Feb. 10, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

Topics included: how to improve school lunches; the importance of physical education and recess; healthy eating habits; modeling better nutrition; the importance of sports and exercise and banning fattening food in public schools. The students who participated were:f ourth-graders  Tyler Eggleston,Bobby Williams, Ethan Quill, Rachel Chaffey, Virginia Taylor, and  Tasher Odom ; and fifth-graders, Ella Benbow, Jessica Mellon, Kate Pizzini, Kayla Manarin and Maddie Hazzard.
