Born on this date in 1737, John Hancock is best known for penning the first, and most prominent, signature on the Declaration of Independence as president of the Second Continental Congress. He also commissioned George Washington – Alexandria citizen as well as future first president – as the commander in chief of the Army of the United Colonies in 1775. Schools Recognized
George Mason Elementary School and Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy are among 288 schools and 15 school divisions earning the 2010 Board of Education Excellence Award, announced today by the Virginia Board of Education. The award is the second-tier honor in the Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) incentive program, created by the board in 2007 to advance Gov. Timothy M. High-school Orientation
All Alexandria City Public Schools rising 10th -, 11th – and 12th-grade students are invited to attend the annual Orientation Program at the T.C. Williams High School main campus, 3330 King St., at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, in the auditorium. Students will receive course selection and technology information and meet guidance counselors, school administrators, teachers and staff. Big Games
The T.C. Williams High School Boys’ Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball Teams will be playing top-ranked Montrose Christian School in two of the most anticipated contests of the season this Saturday, Jan.16, at home on Earl Lloyd Court. The Junior Varsity game will start at 6 p.m., and the varsity game will start approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
