Celebrate PTA Founders Day, which celebrates the many accomplishments of the nation’s largest volunteer child advocacy organization, founded in 1897 in Washington, D.C., by Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Alice McLellan Birney. The commemorative day also pays tribute to Selena Sloan Butler, who founded Georgia’s Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers in 1919. Regular Schedules

All Alexandria City Public Schools will return to their regular schedules beginning Thursday, Feb. 18.  Student afternoon and evening activities will remain cancelled for the remainder of the week.

Employee professional development activities will be conducted as scheduled.

The City’s Recreation Department programs and activities will be held as scheduled with the exception of the Power-Up programs at George Washington and Francis Hammond Middle School campuses. All Youth and Adult Sport League activities will be held as scheduled.

Council’s Snow Update

Last night’s Alexandria City Council meeting included city officials’ updates regarding the snow emergency. ACPS Superintendent Morton Sherman talked about the decision-making process regarding delays and closures and reflected on areas to be addressed for future planning. New Director

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Superintendent Morton Sherman is pleased to announcement the appointment of David L. Temple to the position of executive director for strategic initiatives. Read more at http://www.acps.k12.va.us/news2010/nr2010021701.php .

Police Assistance

The Alexandria Police Department will provide increased assistance to Alexandria City Public Schools as students return to school following last week’s historic winter storms.  Additional police personnel will be assigned to each City school between 9 and 11 a.m. and 2 and 4 p.m. through Friday, Feb. 19.  Officers will assist with safety during arrival and dismissal periods. Camp Fair

Families are invited to the 2010 Summer Camp Fair sponsored by the PTA Council of Alexandria.  The 2010 Summer Camp Fair is Wednesday, February 24, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Minnie Howard campus of T.C. Williams High School, 3801 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria. Admission is free; parking is available on the east side of the school (near athletic fields) and signs will lead you from the parking garage to the cafeteria’s side entrance.
