Board Notes

* Discussion about reinstating Jefferson-Houston as a focus school with a focus on IB-PYP, K-8 instead of arts integration. The Board will vote on Feb. 25.
* Overview of the City Manager’s proposed Operating and CIP Budgets

Sports Events
T.C. Williams High School athletes have a busy weekend in store! The Patriot District Basketball Tournament’s first round gets under way today, with the girls playing at W.T. Woodson High School at 5:45 p.m. and the boys playing at Annandale High School at 7:30 p.m. T.C. Williams will host the Patriot District Semifinals on Saturday, with girls’ teams playing at 1 and 3 p.m. and boys’ teams playing at 5 and 7 p.m. The tournament championship will take place at T.C. Williams on Monday, Feb. 22, with the girls’ game at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game at 8 p.m. Read more at http://www.acps.k12.va.us/news2010/nr2010021905.php .

Turn the Page
There’s still plenty of time to “Turn the Page” and participate in the community reading event sponsored by the Alexandria PTA Council in cooperation with ACPS and the Alexandria Library. The featured book is “NurtureShock: New Thinking about Children” by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. “Turn the Page” is designed to encourage parents, teachers and community members from across the city to join together to read and discuss books related to the future of education. Join a book group now; visit www.acps.k12.va.us/ptac/read for an updated schedule of meetings, including gatherings that are rescheduled because of the snow. SAVE THE DATE: Plan to attend a lecture by co-author Ashley Merryman at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 8, at T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King St., Alexandria. Ms. Merryman will be available to sign books after the presentation.

Rescheduled SOLs
ACPS will move the scheduled SOL Writing Test for students in grades five, eight and 11 from March 3 and 4 to March 9 and 10. The multiple-choice portion will be administered on Tuesday, March 9, and the direct writing portion will be administered on Wednesday, March 10. Make-up testing will be held from March 11 through 18.

Rescheduled Book Fair
John Adams Elementary School’s Spring Book Fair, postponed due to the bad weather, is taking place through Feb. 23. Books for all tastes will be available.  Clifford the Big Red Dog will be joining the fun. The event also will feature teacher classroom wish lists for parents who wish to donate books to classrooms. AVID Night
Parents are invited to attend the annual Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Parent Information Night on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at T.C. Williams High School’s Auditorium, 3330 King St., Alexandria. Students currently in grades six through nine with grade point averages of 2.0 to 3.5 may be eligible for the AVID program for the 2010-2011 school year. Senior Experience
Come learn about the Senior Experience internship program, available for students in the 12th grade who are on track for graduation, during a Senior Experience Parent Meeting at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the T.C. Williams High School auditorium, 3330 King St., Alexandria.  Seniors who have their verified credit for graduation, are passing all of their classes and have good attendance and behavior may be eligible for the Senior Experience Program.
