Moran holds press conference featuring men and women discharged under DADT

Today, Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) convened a press conference to bring attention to the human impact of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” (DADT). The event brought together congressional leaders and a range of groups and individuals – all committed to the responsible, speedy repeal of this antiquated policy.

“Lost among the statistics, the testimony of our military leaders, and the debate over the political implications of repeal, are the soldiers themselves – those who want nothing more than to serve their nation honorably and honestly,” said Moran. “And that is why we are here today – to hear from those who have served to remind us why repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell must be accomplished this year.”

Former Air Force Staff Sergeant David Hall, Navy Captain Joan Darrah, Coast Guard Bronwen Tomb and Army Officer Jon Powers shared their personal stories, while Moran, joined by Representatives Lois Capps, Jerrold Nadler, and Jared Polis praised the speakers for their courage and vowed not to let up in the fight to pass legislation this year.

“Now, not next year, is the time to finally honor the sacrifice of all of our service members by repealing this policy,” said Moran, who has been a vocal leader in the repeal movement.

“We will not give in…not when the facts and the American public are on our side.”
