Telegraph Road Overnight Closures August 19, 23, And 24 For Concrete Girder Placement

Motorists are Urged to Use Alternate Routes

As part of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, construction activities will require full ramp and lane closures of Telegraph Road and connecting ramps to the Capital Beltway in both directions for concrete girder placement under the Capital Beltway Inner Loop bridge. Rain delays have pushed back scheduled work by one day, with activities now expected to take place Thursday, Aug. 19, Monday, Aug. 23, and Tuesday, Aug. 24 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Crews will close one direction of Telegraph Road and corresponding ramps at a time, beginning with Telegraph Road North and the ramps to Eisenhower Avenue and the Outer Loop. On Monday, Aug. 23, workers will again close Telegraph Road North and the ramps to Eisenhower Avenue and the Outer Loop until 1 a.m. Operations will then move to Telegraph Road South, where they will institute a full closure along with the ramp from the Inner Loop to Telegraph Road South. On Tuesday, Aug. 24, workers will reclose Telegraph Road South and the connecting ramp to complete the concrete girder placement. Crews will begin taking lanes at 10 p.m. each evening with full closures by 11 p.m. All traffic will be restored by 5 a.m., prior to rush hour the following morning.

Note: Due to materials availability the closures, order has been reversed from that which was originally scheduled. Work will begin on Telegraph Road North and conclude on Telegraph Road South.

The detailed closure schedule is as follows:

Thursday, Aug. 19 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning:

  • Telegraph Road North will be closed to traffic.
    • Detour: Motorists can turn right onto Huntington Avenue East to U.S. Route 1 North. I-95/495 traffic can use the appropriate entrance ramps. Motorists wishing to access Telegraph Road North can use the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) to Telegraph Road North.
  • The ramp from Telegraph Road North to Eisenhower Avenue will be closed.
    • Detour: Motorists can take Huntington Avenue East to U.S. Route 1 North to Duke Street West to Telegraph Road South to Mill Road to Eisenhower Avenue.
  • The ramp from Telegraph Road North to the Outer Loop will be closed.
    • Detour: Motorists can take Huntington Avenue East to U.S. Route 1 North to meet back up with the Capital Beltway Outer Loop.

Monday, Aug. 23 from 10 p.m. to about 1 a.m.:

  • Telegraph Road North will be closed to traffic.
    • Detour: Motorists can turn right onto Huntington Avenue East to U.S. Route 1 North. I-95/495 traffic can use the appropriate entrance ramps. Motorists wishing to access Telegraph Road North can use the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) to Telegraph Road North.
  • The ramp from Telegraph Road North to Eisenhower Avenue will be closed.
    • Detour: Motorists can take Huntington Avenue East to U.S. Route 1 North to Duke Street West to Telegraph Road South to Mill Road to Eisenhower Avenue.
  • The ramp from Telegraph Road North to the Outer Loop will be closed.
    • Detour: Motorists can take Huntington Avenue East to U.S. Route 1 North to meet back up with the Capital Beltway Outer Loop.

Monday, Aug. 23 (into Tuesday, Aug. 24) from about 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.:

  • Telegraph Road South will be closed to traffic.
    • Detour: Signs will be posted on Duke Street. Duke Street East travelers should continue on Duke Street East, then to U.S. Route 1 South. I-95/495 traffic can use appropriate entrance ramps. Motorists wishing to access Telegraph Road South can continue to Huntington Avenue West back to Telegraph Road South. Duke Street West travelers will be redirected to Duke Street West to Van Dorn Street South to the Capital Beltway Inner or Outer Loops.
  • The ramp from the Capital Beltway Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) to Telegraph Road South will be closed.
    • Detour: Variable Message Signs will notify motorists in advance to exit and U.S. Route 1 South to Huntington Avenue West back to Telegraph Road South.

Tuesday, Aug. 24 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning:

  • Telegraph Road South will be closed to traffic.
    • Detour: Signs will be posted on Duke Street. Duke Street East travelers should continue on Duke Street East, then to U.S. Route 1 South. I-95/495 traffic can use appropriate entrance ramps. Motorists wishing to access Telegraph Road South can continue to Huntington Avenue West back to Telegraph Road South. Duke Street West travelers will be redirected to Duke Street West to Van Dorn Street South to the Capital Beltway Inner or Outer Loops.
  • The ramp from the Capital Beltway Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) to Telegraph Road South will be closed.
    • Detour: Variable Message Signs will notify motorists in advance to exit and U.S. Route 1 South to Huntington Avenue West back to Telegraph Road South.

Motorists are strongly urged to seek alternate routes to avoid delays during this overnight work as backups may be significant. Please use caution when traveling in this area. All construction-related work and dates are subject to change, depending on weather, material and contractor availability or other unforeseen conditions.
