Preserves Right To Obtain Federal Funding

In a rare special summer meeting, the Alexandria City Council met last Thursday night to approve City Manager Jim Hartmann’s Aug. 5, State of Emergency Declaration. Council approval is required to preserve the right to apply for funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Hartmann declared a local State of Emergency during the severe storm that left trees down and thousands without power. Five of the seven members of Council were present, with Councilman Paul Smedberg and Councilwoman Alicia Hughes excused. Council approved the resolution unanimously.
Whereas, on August 5,2010, the City Manager, in his capacity as the Director
of Emergency Management of the City of Alexandria, as a result of a serious
thunderstorm, found that the City of Alexandria faced emergency conditions creating risk to the lives and property of the citizens of the City of Alexandria which constituted a disaster, and made a Declaration of Local Emergency; and
Whereas, State law and City Code require that such Declaration of Local
Emergency be approved and confirmed by City Council, as the governing body of the City of Alexandria, Virginia.
Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Council of the City of Alexandria, Virginia, that the Declaration of Local Emergency, dated August 5,2010, at 6:00 p.m., is approved and confirmed; provided, however, that such Declaration expired at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2010.
