A man remains in serious condition at Medstar after he was hit by a van while crossing Duke Street.

Police were called to the intersecion of Duke and Sweeley streets at around 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, to investigate an accident in which a pedestrian was struck by a van. According to Alexandria police, the man crossed Duke Street in front of a small yellow bus and was hit by a van, which was traveling in the center lane. The victim was transported to Medstar by helicopter and the driver of the van was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening medical treatment. One lane of Duke Street in each direction was closed until shortly after 6:00 p.m. while the police department’s accident reconstruction team investigated the incident.

While the accident is still under investigation and it is not clear whether the pedestrian was crossing the street against the traffic signal, police urge pedestrians to be careful. “we always ask that pedestrians always cross the street in a crosswalk and make sure they pay attention to the traffic signals and watch for any approaching vehicles into that intersection,” said Jody Donaldson, a spokesperson for the Alexandria Police Department.
