Three Alexandria Schools To Receive Marine Corps 2010 Healthy School Award

George Mason, James K. Polk and William Ramsay elementary schools are among five Virginia elementary schools which will receive the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Healthy School Award and a $1,000 donation from MCM partner Sodexo. In early 2011, each school will receive the award for outstanding student participation in MCM’s Healthy Kids Fun Run, designed for students ages 6 to 13 and held on Oct. 30 in Arlington.

Virginia Submits Chesapeake Bay Cleanup Plan

Secretary of Natural Resources Doug Domenech announced yesterday that Virginia has submitted its Chesapeake Bay Watershed Implementation Plan to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The plan identifies actions to reduce the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment entering the Bay from all major sources, including sewage treatment plants, industrial facilities, urban areas, agriculture, forestry and septic systems.

ACPS Seeks Identity

Parents, teachers and other staff are being asked to help “brand” the Alexandria City Public School system. In mid-November, ACPS principals got a letter from the “Superintends Office” asking each principal to convene a group of 15 to 20 teachers and staff and another group of 15 to 20 parents to participate in Discovery Bridge.

Santa Claus and carolers rang in the holiday season in Alexandria at the annual lighting of the City’s Christmas tree on Friday night. Mayor Bill Euille flipped the switch and the lights came on, but less than 24 hours after the happy holiday spectacle, the 40-foot tall Norway Spruce came crashing down.
