Alexandria Fire Department Responds To High-Rise Apartment Fire

This afternoon, December 22, at 4 p.m., the Alexandria Fire Department, assisted by units from Arlington and Fairfax Counties, responded to a two-alarm fire in an unsprinklered, residential high-rise building at 5340 Holmes Run Parkway. Firefighters effectively extinguished the fire in a basement storage room, but smoke spread throughout the 16-story structure. At least one occupant was rescued from the building and treated by Alexandria paramedics after reporting a medical emergency during the incident.

A number of residents are sheltering in DASH buses while firefighters work floor-by-floor to remove smoke from the building and make it safe to re-occupy. More than 50 firefighters, paramedics, and emergency management personnel are on the scene. The cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated by Alexandria fire marshals.
