Today marks the birthday of two famous poets – Lebanese Kahlil Gibran in 1883 and American Carl Sandburg in 1878 – who offer some education-oriented words of wisdom. According to Gibran, “The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind.” Sandburg, in his poem “Arithmetic,” provides this description: “Arithmetic is numbers you squeeze from your head to your hand to your pencil to your paper till you get the answer.” Visit a school or city library for more by these writers.
