When T.C. Williams High School included perennial basketball power Riverdale Baptist High School on the boys’ 2009-10 schedule, expectations were mixed. However, this year’s teams are experiencing role reversal, with the Titans ranked 11th in the Metropolitan area and Riverdale Baptist not ranked at all. Last night at the Garden, the Titans triumphed over the Crusaders, 71-55.
The contest was close for most of the first half. The Titans started strong, finishing the first quarter with a seven-point lead, 17-10. However, halfway through the second quarter, the Crusaders took a two-point lead. After that, the Titans regained control of the game and had an eight-point margin at the half, 34-26. Senior center Billy Rowland added an exclamation point with his last-second shot, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
In the second half, it was all Titans. Rowland and senior forward Ryan Yates scored at will, leading all scorers with 28 and 23 points respectively. The Titan victory brings their record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Patriot District play. T.C. will host Lake Braddock on Friday, Jan. 8, at 7:45 p.m.
Titan Girls Fall to Chargers
While the boys were hosting the Crusaders, the Titan girls’ basketball team visited Chantilly and lost, 60-47. The girls’ record is now 2-6, 0-2 in the Patriot District. The T.C. girls will travel to Lake Braddock to face the Bruins in an important District contest on Friday. Game time is 7:45 p.m.
