An anger management counselor who is serving a year in prison for pulling a gun on two federal marshals during a traffic incident, has also lost his license to practice counseling in Virginia. Jose Luis Avila, 57, of Annandale, pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer in April and, on June 29, was sentenced to one year and one day in prison. When he is released, he will spend two years on supervised probation.
According to court documents, on Jan. 25, 2010, Avila honked his horn at two Deputy United States Marshals, who had just returned to their cars after completing a witness interview on Americana Drive in Annandale. Avila initially left the scene after one of the Deputy Marshals waved him around. Avila then turned his car around and pointed a loaded firearm at the Deputy Marshals. The Deputy Marshals apprehended Avila and recovered the firearm after a brief pursuit.
Before his arrest Avila was a professional counselor and a licensed marriage and family therapist.
