Although flooding is not as widespread as previously predicted, a flood watch remains in effect for Alexandria’s waterfront through tonight.
On Saturday, rising waters did not deter Starbucks on Union Street from opening and serving coffee lovers. The staff moved items off low shelves and customers stepped in small amounts of water on the floor to get that morning late. Today, however, the Potomac River made its way past Union Street and the fire marshal closed Starbucks because of the danger of walking in dirty river water.

The river is receding now but is expected to flood lower King Street again at high tide this evening. So far, Alexandria has gotten about an inch of rain since Friday and could get a bit more before the storm leaves the area tomorrow. Motorists are urged to drive with caution and be aware of standing water in low lying roadways. Also, heavy fog is predicted throughout the remainder of today into tomorrow’s morning rush hour. The sun should return, according to the National Weather Service, on Tuesday with temperatures in the ’60s for the remainder of the week.
