On Sept. 14, Alexandria Councilwoman Alicia Hughes is expected in General District Court to respond to an unlawful detainer suit. Her landlord, Realty Management Inc., the managers of The Strand Apartments on Yoakum Parkway in Alexandria, is attempting to evict Hughes for the eighth time in three years for nonpayment of rent.

Safeway Foundation Distributes $130,000 To Local Charities
The Safeway Foundation presented grant award checks totaling nearly $130,000 to 31 mid-Atlantic region non-profit agencies during a ceremony at Safeway Eastern Division Headquarters earlier this week. Thus far, the Foundation has distributed $194,000 in donations in 2011.

First, I would like to congratulate the City of Alexandria on their heartfelt efforts to close this power plant and the GenOn company for this wise decision to agree. This decision was a long time in the making, and I hope GenOn follows through on the closing of the plant in 2012.

GenOn Potomac River Generating Station To Close
The City of Alexandria and GenOn Energy have reached an agreement to permanently close the company’s Potomac River Generating Station, which began operating in 1949. To facilitate the retirement of the plant, the City of Alexandria will release approximately $32 million currently held in escrow, which was set aside to pay for the additional environmental controls at the station as a result of a 2008 agreement between the City and GenOn.
Races Set For November Election
Alexandria’s state and local contests are set for the November General Election. Incumbent State Delegates David Englin (D-45) and Charniele Herring (D-46) are unopposed.
Alexandria Police Sobriety Checkpoint Results
Alexandria police conducted a sobriety checkpoint in the 1800 block of Jefferson Davis Highway to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers from 10:00 P.M. on Friday, August 26, to 6:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 27.
