Titans Bring Northern Region Crown Back Home
By Carla Branch
Last night, both T. C. Williams High School varsity basketball teams played in the Northern Region tournament finals. While the T. C. girls gave West Springfield a great game, they lost 46-41. The Titans boys, however, brought the Northern Region title back to T. C. after a year of disappointment last year. T. C. defeated Annandale for the third time this year, 59-54.
The Titan boys have not made it look easy throughout the Northern Region tournament although their margin of victory has not shown it. They won a close game against Herndon on Saturday night to propel them to the finals last night against Patriot District rival Annandale.
Both the Atoms and the Titans started slow and the game never developed a rhythm. In the first quarter, neither team shot well and the period ended with Annandale ahead, 10-8. Senior Rick Mathews led the way in the first quarter for the Titans, scoring six of their eight points. He was the tournament MVP, and continued to give the Titans points when they needed them.
The second period didn’t look much better than the first, with neither team shooting well. The Titans’ swarming defense kept it close however, and the half ended with Annandale still in the lead, 21-17.
Although shooting improved in the second half, the Titans missed a number of foul shots, which kept Annandale closer than they should have been. By the end of the third, T. C. had taken the lead and they never relinquished it. The score at the end of that period was Titans 39, Annandale 34. In the fourth, the Titans continued to play great defense and Annandale began to foul. The Atoms pulled to within three near the end of the game but T. C. made enough of their free throws to put the game away and they won by five, 59-54.
In addition to bringing home the tournament trophy, the T. C. students also won the Northern Region sportsmanship award, which is given to the fans who showed the most sportsmanship throughout the tournament. The Titans will face Phoebus , in a State tournament quarterfinal on Friday night at 8:45, at Robinson. Phoebus defeated the Titans earlier this year, 48-41.
