Alexandria City Councilwoman Alicia Hughes was in court again last week on an unlawful detainer, which was filed by Realty Management Services, the company which manages The Strand apartments in Alexandria where Hughes lives. The judge awarded Realty Management Services $2,296.49, court costs of $56, attorney fees of $500 and 6% interest on the principal judgment, which will run from Feb. 2, the date of the judgment, until it is paid. Realty Management Services also won the right to evict Hughes.
Since 2008, Realty Management Services has filed nine unlawful detainers against Hughes, four in 2011. This most recent case was filed on Dec. 27, 2011, and continued twice in January. The case was finally heard and adjudicated last Thursday.
Hughes was elected to Council in 2009, as an Independent. Although she has made no official announcement about running this year, it is widely expected that she will seek another term on Council, this time as a Republican candidate.

I'm generally sympathetic to people facing financial troubles, but this seems to happen over and over again to Hughes. She could have moved to a less expensive place, taken in a roommate to share costs, even waited tables or cleaned houses for extra money. It's been four years worth of drama with Hughes and it's embarrassing to the city.
