Irish skies were smiling on Alexandria on Saturday as the Ballyshaners and the City of Alexandria hosted the City’s 31st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Held on the first Saturday in March, the parade is the country’s first St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Grand Marshals Tom and Melinda Mooney, owners of Murphy’s Grand Irish Pub, led this year’s parade and reviewed the remaining 130 units as they passed the reviewing stands. The Ballyshaners estimate that this was perhaps the largest crowd ever to watch a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Alexandria.
The parade included marching bands, bagpipes, units representing every branch of the military and, of course, politicians. Before the parade, visitors were treated to a dog show at Market Square and an antique car show on Pitt Street.
