The Inova Governance Board has approved the establishment of the Inova Comprehensive Cancer and Research Institute. The ICCRI will coordinate current cancer services provided across all five Inova hospitals and will present a new and unique opportunity for the development of a national comprehensive cancer program in relation to treatment and research. Once constructed, the ICCRI will be a seven-story, freestanding cancer facility on the Inova Fairfax Hospital campus. Inova Fairfax Hospital was recently named the number #1 healthcare provider in the metropolitan D.C. area by U.S. News and World Report.

Alexandria’s “Sticker Shock” Highlights Risks And Consequences Of Giving Alcohol To Minors Youth

On Oct. 27, teams of youth and adults from the City of Alexandria will “shock” purchasers of alcohol by placing bright red warning stickers on multi-packs of beer, wine coolers and other alcohol products in Alexandria stores. Sticker Shock is a youth-led initiative designed to educate adults who might be tempted to purchase alcohol legally and provide it to minors.

Carbon Monoxide Leak Forces Evacuation Of Apartment Building

This morning at 6:29am the Alexandria Fire Department was dispatched to the 900 block of North Van Dorn Street for a Carbon Monoxide alarm sounding with residents complaining of symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Arriving firefighters found elevated CO levels ranging from 45ppm to as high as 232 ppm in three apartments. Two residents were evaluated but refused transport to the hospital. The building, a three story garden apartment building in the Willow Run Apartment complex, was ventilated. Initial investigation determined the source of the CO originated in the building's boiler room.

Walk To Fight Breast Cancer Raises $95,000

The 19th Annual Walk to Fight Breast Cancer, held Saturday, Oct. 20, drew nearly 900 walkers and runners and raised more than $90,000. Jack Taylor’s Alexandria Toyota/Scion and the Alexandria Fire Department were major donors to the event. For every car sold during October, Taylor donates $50, and for every “like” the company receives on Facebook, he donates $15. The Alexandria Fire Department sold pink breast cancer tee shirts, raising over $7,000.

Alexandria Campaign On Adolescent Pregnancy Receives Prevention Grant

The Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy received a three-year Personal Responsibility Education Program grant for $290,494 per year from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families to provide prevention programs that address teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections to approximately 800 at-risk youth.
