The holiday season is the season for giving and that is exactly what Alexandria Transit Company did in support of the Community Partners for Children. In the last two weeks, DASH representatives have been stationed outside of the King Street Metro Station entrance accepting gifts for the children and giving out tokens of appreciation to those who came by.

A spectacular fireworks display over the Potomac River will ring in the New Year as the grand finale of First Night Alexandria, the New Year’s Eve bash that takes over Old Town. The city’s most musical evening features Argentinean tango, New Orleans funk, traditional Irish music, rocking rhythm and blues, classic country, acoustic folk, and jazz violin, to name just a few of the 116 acts found at 21 indoor venues on Dec. 31.

Alexandria’s holiday landmark, The Christmas Attic partnered once again with area schools, churches, businesses and community groups to help produce a temporary exhibition featuring illuminated canvases of art to be revealed on their building for its 2nd Annual Holiday Advent Calendar Art Celebration. The event is a creative holiday activity that helps celebrate the “magic & wonder” of the holiday season, while giving back to the community. From December 1 through December 24 at sundown, the store revealed “advent art” featuring a variety of local organizations and artists holiday creations.

The placement of evergreen wreaths on the stone markers of veterans who served and sacrificed for our nation began at Arlington Cemetery in 1992 and now is observed in hundreds of cemeteries large and small every December. At noon this Saturday, Dec. 15, there will be Wreaths Across America remembrance ceremony at the Alexandria National Cemetery. The Saturday observance marks the 10th year that Wreaths Across America has conducted an observance ceremony in Alexandria.
