It will be a white-out Christmas in some parts of the nation, and it could throw a monkey wrench in some holiday travel plans. A major winter storm churning in the nation’s midsection is already becoming the Grinch who steals Christmas for millions of Christmas travelers on the ground and in the air. Airlines are cancelling, delaying or suspending flights for frequent and infrequent holiday fliers, which will ricochet across the country. The first major snowstorm of the season is rendering already slippery roads treacherous and the trip home perilous.

Surely, it is destined to go down in history as the greatest exodus from the Washington metro area in the 21st Century. Now that Christmas is near, four out of ten Washington area residents, or a staggering 41.5 percent of the area’s total populace, say they intend to take trips of 50 miles or more from home during the 10-day holiday travel period, AAA Mid-Atlantic is projecting.

Inova Board Announces Approval For $22.9 Million Emergency Department Addition At Inova Mount Vernon Hospital

The Inova Governance Board has approved a state-of-the-art addition to the Emergency Department at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. The new facility will be approximately 21,000 square feet with 30 treatment bays (of which 2 are resuscitation rooms and 4 are negative air rooms), 5 fast track bays, CT and Digital X-Ray and modern HVAC system. The proposed addition would create a new ED entrance which will separate emergency patient flow from other patient and visitor traffic.

Dulles Toll Road New Rates Take Effect

Effective Jan. 1, 2013, the toll rate on the Dulles Toll Road will increase by 25 cents at the Main Toll Plaza to $1.75. Toll rates on the on/off ramps will increase by 25 cents to $1.

No Deals: Local Car Rental Rates Will Skyrocket 71 Percent This Christmas

Talk about sticker shock this Christmas. Daily car rental rates for that road-trip, jaunt or far-flung expedition 50 miles or more from home at Christmas, or for that luxury car fit for the stars for that excursion to all the hot spots around town on New Year’s Eve, are skyrocketing this year. That’s according to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index. This year it might be cheaper to take that trip in “a one-horse open sleigh.”

More Than One In Four Americans To Take A Road Trip This Holiday Season

93.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holidays, AAA is projecting. That’s an increase of 1.6 percent over the 91.8 million people who traveled last year. This increase brings holiday travel figures to within half a million of the decade high mark seen during the 2006/2007 season.

New E-15 Gasoline May Damage Vehicles

A recent survey by AAA finds a strong likelihood of consumer confusion and the potential for voided warranties and vehicle damage as a result of the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent approval of E15 gasoline. An overwhelming 95 percent of consumers surveyed have not heard of E15, a newly approved gasoline blend that contains up to 15 percent ethanol.
