Alexandria Police identified the officer involved in today’s shooting as Officer Peter Laboy. Officer Laboy is a 45-year-old, 17-year veteran of the police department. He has spent the past six years as a motorcycle officer in our Motor Unit. The suspect is Kashif Bashir, a Pakistani male, 27 years old, of Woodbridge, Virginia. He is in custody and has been charged with Malicious Wounding of a Law Enforcement Officer and Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony.

Laboy was shot this morning while attempting to stop a yellow cab minivan at the corner of S. St. Asaph and Wilkes Street in Old Town. He was flown to MedStar with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. The driver of the Yellow Cab fled south on the George Washington Parkway, pursued by Alexandria and Fairfax county police. The cab crashed near Fort Hunt Road and Belleview Boulevard. Fairfax county police took the driver into custody and are investigating the accident scene.

About 11:45 a.m. today, an Alexandria City Police officer responded to a call about a suspicious cab at the corner of Wilkes Street and South Saint Asaph Street.  Two first grade classes were on the playground at Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy at the time and were evacuated into the building by their teachers.  The school immediately went to a lock-in mode, with no further outdoor recess allowed.
Police and fire personnel responded immediately to the scene and  cordoned off the area until further notice.  Emergency personnel used the LCTA ball field to land a Medivac helicopter to transport the injured officer to the hospital.  Other police went in pursuit of the cab down the George Washington Parkway.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Section of the Alexandria Police Department at 703.746.6711.
