Alexandria may not have Friday night lights—yet, but there’s still plenty to splash about at the end of the week at Chinquapin Rec Center.  Family Splash Night, formerly known as Family Fun Night, returns Friday, Oct. 7.  Each month, the City and the Chinquapin Advisory Council host an evening of water safety and fun designed for the whole family. Activities include beach ball relays, water basketball, diving for prizes, and the ‘Aqua Challenge’ floating obstacle course. Admission is $4 per person and everyone in the city is invited to attend.

Each Splash Night, a different Alexandria City Public School is featured, although the general public is always welcome. The Oct. 7 theme is night of Bully Free fun and, in coordination through local PTAs and ACPS welcomes the students and families at Charles Barrett Elementary School.

“The City and the Chinquapin Advisory Council have done a great job hosting Family Splash Nights at the Rixse pool,” says Advocates for Alexandria Aquatics President, Bill Rivers. “It’s done up really well – lots of play features at the pool, inflatable obstacle courses, displays from the Nature Center – just all sorts of fun for the kids and their family.  They can have up to 300 people there on a Friday night!  I’ve taken my grandchildren and they’ve had a wonderful time.  We at the Advocates for Alexandria Aquatics fully support the events and encourage anyone who wants to have fun to go there.  There are even free snacks for the kids at the end of their swim.”

The event was created to provide more family fitness opportunities in the city and familiarize residents with both their local public pools and water safety. Last year the 18 night event drew a combined total of more than 1,000 swimmers to the pool, with more than 300 first time visitors to Chinquapin Pool. Attendees can also learn more about plans to build a 50-meter pool in addition to existing Chinquapin pool.
