Fire Department Reminder: Fireworks Are Dangerous And Illegal In Alexandria

The Alexandria Fire Department reminds those who visit, live and work in Alexandria that it is dangerous and illegal to store, sell or use any fireworks (including sparklers or novelty items) in the City of Alexandria without a permit. Any unauthorized fireworks found in Alexandria will be seized by the Fire Marshal at the owner’s expense. Fireworks violations are Class 1 misdemeanors and may be punishable by a $2,500 fine, 12 months in jail, or both. 

Regional Delegation Requests Reversal Of FTA Decision To Withhold Federal Transit Funds From Virginia, Maryland, DC

Today, 12 members of Congress from Virginia and Maryland sent a letter requesting the U.S. Transportation Secretary reverse the FTA decision to withhold 5% of federal transit grants from the Commonwealth of Virginia, the State of Maryland, and the District of Columbia. The members assert the decision to withhold the funds authorized under the Urbanized Area Apportionments Program was crude, punitive, and arbitrary, and the process that led to the decision was deeply flawed.

Warner, Kaine Join Shaheen To Introduce Additional Legislation To Stabilize Health Care Maketplace

Defendents Sentenced For Theft From Alexandria Fire Department

On June 29, Monique Jackson Asante, a 49-year-old resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, was sentenced for the theft of over $200,000 from the Alexandria Fire Department in a complex fraud case. Additionally, five co-conspirators have been convicted as a result of this investigation: Corey King, Jamarr Martin, Isaac Pardie, James Little and Shantell Sims.

Alexandria Police To Conduct DWI Enforcement

On July 1, the Alexandria Police Department will conduct a stationary DWI enforcement effort to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers. The DWI checkpoint will begin at 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, and continue until 5 a.m. on Sunday, July 2. Motorists will be stopped at a checkpoint and drivers will be checked to assure that their abilities to drive have not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.

New Protection For Virginia Employees Goes Into Effect July 1

Attorney General Mark R. Herring and the Virginia Department of Taxation are reminding Virginians and Virginia employers about a new measure that goes into effect on July 1 to protect personal information and prevent identity theft and the filing of fraudulent tax returns. Under new legislation passed by the General Assembly, Virginia employers must notify both the affected employee and the Office of the Attorney General if an employee’s tax identification number in combination with the income tax withheld for that person has been breached.
