Rachael Dischner Named Principal Of The New West End Elementary School

Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Virginia Council on Women today announced the seventh annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Essay Contest for high school junior and senior women. The Council will award at least five $5,000 scholarships to young women, in their junior and senior years in high school, who will be pursuing a STEM career at an institution of higher education.

The Alexandria City School Board has selected Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., a 1995 graduate of T. C. Williams High School, as Superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools. Hutchings will begin his duties at ACPS on July 1.

McAuliffe Signs Executive Directive 14, Announces Budget Actions To Address Virginia’s Teacher Shortage

Governor McAuliffe today announced a series of budget actions and signed a new executive directive to address Virginia’s growing teacher shortage. Budget actions include both new investments and budget language targeting teacher recruitment and retention, and the directive asks the Virginia Board of Education to issue emergency regulations giving colleges and universities the option to offer undergraduate majors in education.

Virginia Schools Closing Connectivity Gap

The schools attended by approximately 75% of Virginia’s 1.3 million public school students now meet or exceed the Federal Communications Commission’s minimum standard for internet connectivity, according to the non-profit organization EducationSuperHighway’s latest state connectivity snapshot. In 2015, only about 14% of Virginia students attended schools meeting the FCC standard.
