Election 2017 – VOTE Editorial

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 polls throughout Alexandria will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. The elections for Sheriff, Commonwealth’s Attorney and Virginia House of Delegates for the 45th and 46th Districts are uncontested. The elections for the Commonwealth’s offices of Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor and Governor are contested.

The power of the individual citizen to vote remains the cornerstone of our democracy. At one time or another, most of us have questioned the quality of the candidate choices available. Yet few wish to put themselves forward under the microscope and the sheer barrage of the internet age. Those who do deserve respect for their willingness to run and voters expect them to serve the public interest well. Our system of government depends on it and thus it depends on an informed citizenry to vote. As has occurred at times in our nation’s past, political cynicism seems to rule the day and it is easy to grow weary. Voting remains the best way to be an active participant in our collective future. urges you to vote to support “your” candidate on Tuesday. We also hope that whoever wins these contests is given a chance to succeed by all of the people of Virginia.
