Wilson Announces Run For Mayor

Vice Mayor Justin Wilson has announced this week that he will be seeking the Democratic nomination for Mayor of Alexandria in the June 2018 Primary.

Wilson, first elected in 2007, is completing his third term on the Alexandria City Council. In this most recent term, he was elected by his colleagues to be the Vice Mayor. For nearly two decades he has served on city, state and regional policy bodies, giving him a broad range of experience and depth of knowledge of the city’s current and future initiatives.

Prior to his Council service, he was an appointee of Governor Mark Warner to the state’s Advisory  Committee on Juvenile Justice, and an appointee of Governor Tim Kaine to the Virginia Board of Juvenile Justice.

“I have approached tough decisions head-on, promoted an accessible, transparent and accountable City government, and remained laser-focused on making Alexandria City a better place to live, work, and raise a family,” Wilson said, “It is imperative that the next leader provide real strategies for the challenges our City faces from a changing regional economy.”

Wilson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Information Systems from Virginia Commonwealth University, and is a Fellow of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia.

“Alexandria must be a community where our children have every opportunity at success, our economy diversifies and grows, and our community’s livability is enriched by quality transit, parks, open space and housing” Wilson. said

Wilson is a progressive and proven member of the City Council, often helping to develop, lead, and deliver policy solutions through consensus and collaboration.

“I believe Alexandria can be the progressive and dynamic community that not only talks about our vision for the future, but actually achieves it,” said Wilson.

Wilson is currently employed as a Senior Director with the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak). He lives in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria with his wife, Alex, their son Eli and daughter Lena. His children attend the Alexandria City Public Schools. The Democratic primary is scheduled for Tuesday June 12, 2018.
