The T. C. Williams High School girls’ basketball team captured the Gunston District Championship title Friday night with a 52-32 victory over Hayfield, winning their third consecutive championship. The Lady Titans have been undefeated in the district/conference for two straight seasons.

When these teams faced each other during the regular season, the Lady Titans notched easy victories of 20+ points in each contest. Not so easy in the championship game although the outcome was the same.

After a low scoring first quarter marked by turnovers and missed shots, both teams battled for points in a tightly contested second quarter with several lead changes. The Titans mounted a 6-0 run at the end of the quarter for a 24-19 advantage at halftime. T. C. Williams led Hayfield 30-22 by the end of the third quarter. Continuing their full-court pressure and up-tempo play, the Titans extended their lead in the fourth quarter to finish with a 20-point victory over the Hawks. The top T. C. scorer was sophomore Halle Walker with 17 points followed by junior Trinity Palacio with 13 points.

Three Titans were selected for the Gunston District All-Tournament team: Elise Levenberry (Sr), Trinity Palacio (Jr), and Tournament MVP Halle Walker (Soph).

The regional championship tournament begins on Feb. 20. As a No. 1 seed, T. C. Williams (20-4) has a first-round bye. On Feb. 21, the Lady Titans host the winner of No. 2 Colgan / No. 4 South County in the quarterfinals at T. C. Williams (7 p.m.). If the Titans win, the semifinals are at Lake Braddock on Feb. 23 (8 p.m.); the regional finals are at Robinson on Feb. 24 (6 p.m.).
