The T. C. Williams boys’ indoor track and field team earned the runner-up title for their second place finish in the state championship on Feb. 23-24. T. C. Williams also had several individual state champions and runners-up.

Titans finished 1-2 in the boys’ 55 meter dash. Junior Ibrahim Bangura won the state champion title with a time of 6.47 seconds and senior Kai Cole finished second in 6.48 for the runner-up title. This was the identical finish as the regional championship and the district championship – the ‘triple crown’ in this event. They also ran the 300 meter dash; Bangura finished seventh in the state meet and Cole placed tenth, both setting new season best times.

T. C. Williams won the state title in the boys 4x200 meter relay with Cole and Bangura paired with sophomores Anthony Eaton and Daniel Fox. Their time of 1:30.46 was just 0.07 seconds off the meet record. The boys 4x400 meter relay – with Kelvin Harris, Anthony Eaton, Terrence Sakyi and Dakarai Wallace – finished ninth.

In field events, senior Sterling Johnson took third place in boys’ shot put with a new personal best throw of 51 feet 4.25 inches. Johnson was the district champion and regional runner-up. T. C. senior Josue Pineda placed seventh at the state meet after winning the regional championship and finishing as runner-up in the district championship.

Senior Daniel Walsh placed third in pole vault at the state championship, clearing 14 ft. 3 in. for a new personal record. Senior Jonathan Joia finished ninth in pole vault.

On the girls’ side, junior Nyla Ward is the 2018 state champion in long jump, winning by 13 inches with a distance of 19 feet 2.75 inches. She also won the regional championship and the district championship. Ward holds the No. 1 ranking in Virginia this season in long jump (19 ft. 5 in.). Ward also placed sixth in the 55 meter dash at the state meet. She was both the regional and district champion in this event.

In shot put, junior Courtney Holford finished fifth and senior Dakota Kindred placed seventh in the state championship. Holford was the 2018 regional champion after finishing as runner-up in the district championship. Kindred was the regional runner-up in shot put.

Earlier this month the T. C. Williams boys’ team won the Occoquan Region Championship and the girls’ team finished as regional runners-up. Both the boys and girls teams won the 2018 Gunston District Championships in early February.
