T. C. Williams High School won the 2018 Gunston District Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. Both the boys and girls teams captured the district title, making history for the Titans.

The T. C. girls ended a drought of more than 30 years. The last time the T. C. girls’ indoor track and field team won a district/conference title was in 1985. The T. C. boys last won the indoor track and field conference championship in 2012.

The top Titan finisher overall was junior Nyla Ward who was the 2018 Gunston District champion in three events – 55 meter dash, long jump and high jump – and runner-up in triple jump. Ward currently holds the No. 1 ranking in Virginia in long jump (19’5”) for this season.

The Titans cleaned up in shot put – in both the girls and boys events.  T. C. girls placed 1-2-3-4-6 to qualify strongly for the regional championship. The girls’ 2018 Gunston District champion was senior Zoe Price and junior Courtney Holford was runner-up. On the boys’ side, Titans finished 1-2-3. Senior Sterling Johnson was the 2018 district champion and senior Josue Pineda was runner-up. T. C. senior Terrence Sakyi was district runner-up in boys’ high jump.

Titans also swept the boys’ pole vault finishing 1-2-3-4 in the event. Senior Daniel Walsh was the 2018 Gunston District champion and senior Jonathan Joia was runner-up; sophomore Kallidan Gebiso took third place and senior Sharrod Baptiste finished fourth. T. C. sophomore Mariama Sangare took second place in the girls’ event.

Titans finished 1-2 in the girls’ 55 meter dash. Junior Nyla Ward was the district champion winning easily with a season best time of 7.18 seconds, barely missing the meet record of 7.14; junior Kendra Oguamena finished second for the runner-up title. Junior Louisa Obenwa won the 55 meter hurdles to earn the 2018 district champion crown. Sophomore Kennedy Browne was district runner-up in the girls’ 500 meter dash, posting a new season best time in this event.

In the mid-distance races, junior Lena Cromley won the 3200 meter run by nearly 30 seconds to capture the Gunston District champion title; junior Tessa Naughton-Rockwell took third place. Sophomore Caroline Peterson became the 1600 meter Gunston District champion with a new season best time.

In the relay events, the T. C. girls won both the 4x200 meter and the 4x400 meter relay races and took second in the 4x800 meter race.

On the boys’ side, T. C. sprinters owned the 55 meter dash, finishing 1-2-4. Junior Ibrahim Bangura was the 2018 Gunston District champion and senior Kai Cole was runner-up; sophomore Anthony Eaton took fourth place.

Titans finished 1-2 in the boys’ 500 meter dash with sophomore Victor Vassallo coming from behind to edge out senior Kelvin Harris by 0.13 seconds in a dramatic finish. The three runners competing in the last heat rounded the final turn into the home stretch three abreast and crossed the finish line less than 1 second apart.

For the relays, the T. C. boys took second place in the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays to qualify for the regional championship in each event.

In team scoring, the T. C. girls captured first place and the 2018 Gunston District title with 193 points; West Potomac was district runners-up with 106 points. The T. C. boys earned the 2018 Gunston District title with 175 points followed by West Potomac as district runners-up with 95 points, barely edging out Annandale with 94 points.

Also on Saturday, the T. C. boys’ 4x200 meter relay – Kai Cole, Ibrahim Bangura, Anthony Eaton and Kelvin Harris – competed in the prestigious Millrose Games at The Armory in New York City. The Titans finished fifth in the elite invitational race. Also competing at the 111th Millrose Games was 2016 T. C. alum Noah Lyles who runs professionally for Adidas. In his 2018 indoor debut, Lyles took second place in the 60 meter dash, posting a new personal best time of 6.59 seconds. Lyles will be competing next at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston on Feb 10, and the USATF Indoor Championship in Albuquerque, NM on Feb. 16.
