The T. C. Williams High School girls’ basketball team defeated West Springfield 46-35 in the regional semifinals last Friday to advance to the final against No. 1 Woodbridge (Cardinal District) on Feb. 24. The Lady Titans fell 47-41 to the Vikings in the regional championship.

At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 11-11 and the Titans pulled ahead 20-15 by halftime. T. C. Williams was up 13 points on Woodbridge with 10 minutes remaining in the game but their lead was narrowed to 34-33 by the end of the third quarter. The Vikings outscored the Titans 14-7 in the last period to win 47-41.

“The girls played really hard but we were unable to close out the game,” said T. C. Williams Head Coach Kesha Walton. “Although it really hurt losing, our team learned a lot from the loss and we are ready for the state tournament.”

Several T. C. Williams players were selected for the All-Region Team. All-Region honors included Player of the Year.

As a regional finalist, T. C. Williams secured a seat in the state tournament. The last time the Lady Titans advanced to the state tournament was in 2011, which was Walton’s first year as T. C. Williams Head Coach. The No. 2-seeded Lady Titans lost to Princess Anne by 8 points in the first round of the tournament. Princess Anne went on to win the state championship.

T. C. Williams (22-5) plays George C. Marshall (26-3), Region D Champs, in the first round of the state tournament at Gar-Field High School (venue change) on Saturday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m. (revised date). If the Titans win, they face the winner of Langley/Woodbridge in the semifinals on Tuesday, March 6. The state championship is at VCU’s Siegel Center in Richmond on Thursday, March 8 (6:00 p.m.).

UPDATE (March 3): Lady Titans defeat Marshall 50-27 to advance to the state semifinals against Langley at Robinson on Tuesday March 6 (7 p.m.)
