Work on I-66 bridge between the Rosslyn Tunnel and the Washington, D.C. line begins

Crews are beginning work to rehabilitate the I-66 bridge between the Rosslyn Tunnel and the Washington, D.C. line, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The 160-foot long bridge, built in 1965, carries drivers over two ramps in Rosslyn: northbound Route 110 to westbound I-66, and southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to eastbound I-66 and westbound Route 50. 

When work is complete, drivers will have a new surface and major elements to maintain safety and extend the overall life of the crossing. Crews will: 

  • Resurface the deck
  • Repair piers and abutments
  • Repave I-66 approaching the bridge for a smooth transition

Most work will be done behind concrete barriers with minimal impact to drivers. In a few instances, crews will schedule lane closures at night:

  • Eastbound I-66: Monday through Friday between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Westbound I-66: Monday through Friday between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

On Wednesday night, April 11 and Thursday night, April 12 between midnight and 4 a.m. each night, drivers can expect temporary stoppages on the ramps under the bridge for crews to set temporary concrete barriers and pavement markings. Crews will monitor traffic and reopen closures to clear backups as needed.

The bridge averages 54,000 vehicles a day eastbound and 44,000 vehicles a day westbound. This $5.7 million project is expected to be complete in summer 2019.
