A steady crowd of more than 50,000 attendees strolled Mount Vernon Avenue during the 23rd annual Art on the Avenue on Oct. 6. The multicultural arts festival featured over 300 area artists and craftspeople, international food, live music on multiple stages, children's craft activities and entertainment, and a pie-baking contest.

Booths lined both sides of Mount Vernon Avenue for ten blocks through the heart of Del Ray. Vendors showcased an array of handmade items, such as jewelry, pottery and ceramics, sculpture, paintings, photography, tote bags and purses, woven scarves and shawls, fabric art, gourmet food, glasswork, soap, turned wood bowls, wooden puzzles, and more.

Live music on four stages was ongoing throughout the day – from Blues to Bluegrass, Irish to Americana, Country to Rock and Roll. There was also a Future Stars stage dedicated to talented young musicians.

Kids of all ages enjoyed painting mini pumpkins, making a scarecrow, creating their own unique art, even decorating a DASH bus with hand prints. Many of the activities were so popular they had to close down early.

The Pie Baking Contest has become a fun and tasty tradition at Art on the Avenue. After the judging and awards, slices of pie are available for sale to benefit a local charity. This year’s pie contest winners were:

Adults: 1st place – Sherri Hrovatin (Pecan Crumble Blueberry Pie); 2nd place – Sarah Smith (Aberdeen Blackberry Pie); 3rd place – Beth Blackwood (Black and Blueberry Crumb Pie)

Kids: 1st place – Isla Carlson and Shelagh Hopkins ('Fall in Love' Strawberry Pie); 2nd place – Patrick and Kate McNabb (Caramel Apple Crunch Pie); 3rd place – Gigi Krupicka and Bea Savarie (Apple Cinnamon Swirl Pie)

There was also an array of food available along the Avenue – both from neighborhood restaurants and a variety of vendors.

Art on the Avenue, which takes place the first Saturday of every October, is sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association.
