Drenching rain and saturated course conditions disrupted the Gunston District Golf Tournament twice last week. The tournament was originally scheduled for Sept. 24-25 at Pohick Golf Course but was postponed to Sept 27-28 because of the prolonged rainy weather.

Play got underway on Sept. 27 despite the forecast for heavy rain during the day. The foursomes – made up of the top 5-6 golfers from each of the five schools – played through the driving rain sometimes losing balls that just disappeared into the soggy course. Instead of two rounds of 18 holes to determine the results, the tournament was called after Round 1 because the persistent rain closed the course on Sept. 28.

As a team, T. C. Williams finished third overall – just two strokes behind Hayfield who took second place and five strokes out of first place, claimed by defending champion West Potomac. Last year T. C. Williams finished second overall to qualify as a team for the regional tournament.

Five Titans qualified as the top individual players and advanced to the regional tournament. T. C. regional qualifiers include senior Deion Sanchez, sophomore Robert Biesada, junior Will Anaya, senior Connor Rex and freshman Laura Anaya. Sanchez was the Titans’ top finisher placing fourth overall with a score of 83; Biesada scored 84 to tie for fifth place. Both made the All-District Team.

The Occoquan Region 6C Golf Tournament takes place at Prince William Golf Course on Oct. 1-2. T. C. Williams also has three girls who are eligible to play in the State Qualifier on Oct. 16: freshman Laura Anaya and seniors Hannah Stone and Leslie Lytle.
