For one student, chess has been a game changer. He now thinks of his moves as strategy and consequences instead of fights.

Students from Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School are learning valuable life lessons by learning the game of chess at the LINK Club at Brent Place Apartments, an affordable housing community in Alexandria’s West End. LINK is an after-school enrichment program where K-5 student residents and ACPS teachers come together at the end of the day for tutoring and mentoring in a friendly atmosphere.

"I’ve seen a huge difference in students’ critical thinking, math skills and behavior toward each other since they’ve taken up chess. They’re participating more and displaying better sportsmanship toward each other. Chess really does apply to everyday living situations,” said Site Coordinator Dawud Rawlings.
