Winter sports at T. C. Williams High School are now fully underway. Sports include boys and girls basketball, gymnastics, indoor track & field, swim/dive, and wrestling. A summary follows of contests from Nov. 26 through Dec. 1.

Boys Basketball
The T. C. Williams boys’ varsity team is playing under new head coach Darryl Prue. In their first game of the season, T. C. Williams notched a 83-42 victory over Washington Latin at home on Nov. 27. On Nov. 30, the Titans lost a close matchup against Wakefield. T. C. Williams came from behind in the second half to tie the game and force overtime, but lost 71-65 to their crosstown rivals. This week the T. C. boys play at Oakton on Dec. 4 (Freshman 4:30 p.m., JV 5:30 p.m., Varsity 7:00 p.m.). The Titans are also competing in the renowned Sleepy Thompson Tournament at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes on Dec. 6-8. T. C. Williams takes on host SSSAS in their first game on Dec. 6 (7 p.m.).

Girls Basketball
The T. C. girls’ varsity basketball team also has a new head coach, Lisa Willis. In their first game of the season, T. C. Williams toppled the Wakefield Warriors70-47 on Nov. 30. The Lady Titans led 27-6 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 40-17 by halftime. T. C. added 30 points in the second half to Wakefield’s 20 for a final score of 70-47. The Lady Titans have two home games this week: Oakton on Dec. 4 (Varsity 7 p.m.), and Yorktown on Dec. 7 (Fr 4:30 / JV 5:45 p.m. / Varsity 7:15 p.m.).

The T. C. Williams gymnastics team opened their season with a meet against Annandale, Edison, Hayfield, Mount Vernon and West Potomac on Nov. 26. This week the Titans compete against Falls Church, Madison, Marshall, and McLean at McLean High School on Dec. 3 (6:30 p.m.).

Indoor Track & Field
The T. C. Williams track and field team competed in the DCIAA Indoor Invitational at the Prince George’s County Sportsplex on Dec. 1. The top finisher for the Titans was senior Ibrahim Bangura, who rolled to a US No. 2 22.67 finish in the 200 meter dash and took first place in the 55 meter dash posting a US No. 1 6.43 time in the season opener. T. C. Williams had four sprinters qualify for eight slots in the 55 meter dash finals. Behind Bangura, senior Robert Longerbeam finished fourth, junior Daniel Fox took sixth and junior Anthony Eaton rounded out the field in eighth place. With that talent, the Titans dominated the boys 4x200 meter relay with a swift 1:33.96 victory. T. C. boys also took third place in both the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays. In field events, senior Shaikimam Sankoh won the boys high jump clearing 6 feet. Sophomore Joshua Peterson took first place in long jump and in triple jump. In a photo finish in the girls 55 meter dash, T. C. senior Nyla Ward narrowly edged out Rakiya Addo of Dunbar High School with a time of at 7.46, that was decided by 0.003 of a second. Ward also won the long jump event. In girls shot put, senior Courtney Holford took first place with a throw more than 1 foot beyond the next competitor. Senior Louisa Obenwa won the 55 meter hurdles, and senior Lena Cromley took first place in the 1600 meter run. The girls’ 4x800 meter relay finished in second place. In team results, the T. C. boys took first place with 110 points, more than twice the points of second place Osbourn High School. The T. C. girls were meet runners-up with 68 points, only 3 points behind Dunbar High School. This week the Titans compete in a regular season regional meet at Episcopal High School / Flippin Fieldhouse on Dec. 8 (7:00 a.m.).

Swim & Dive
The T. C. Swim/Dive team is working under new head coach John Gullickson, previously head coach at Bishop Ireton. The Titans competed against West Potomac in their first dual meet of the season on Nov. 30. The annual Tri-City Swim/Dive Championship – with T. C. Williams, Bishop Ireton, and St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes – takes place over two days this week. The dive championship is at Chinquapin on Dec. 3 (4:30 p.m.), and the swim championship is at the St. James Sports Center in Springfield on Dec. 4 (5:00 p.m.). T. C. Swim/Dive also has a dual meet at Washington-Lee on Dec. 7 (6:30 p.m.).

The JV wrestling squad competed against Marshall on Nov. 29, and this week faces Edison on Dec. 3 (6 p.m.). The varsity squad travels to Falls Church on Dec. 5 (6 p.m.), and also competes in the NOVA Classic tournament at Fairfax High School on Dec. 7-8.
