T.C. Williams Student Wins National Merit Scholarship

T.C. Williams High School senior Zachary C. Whitacre is the recipient of a 2008 National Merit college-sponsored Scholarship. Whitacre, who plans to study business at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., is one of 25 Virginia students who received college-sponsored scholarships, announced on May 28 by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Colleges and universities financed more than 2,800 National Merit Scholarships nationwide.

Movie Review: “Before the Rains”

“Before the Rains” is a film set in Southern India during the 1930s. British plantation owner Henry Moores (Linus Roache) dreams of expanding his tea trade by exporting cinnamon and other spices. A direct route to port is necessary to enhance the flow of trade. Advised by right-hand man T.K. Neelan (Rahul Bose), Moores enlists men from the local village to clear a winding road through dense vegetation before monsoon season begins.

Superintendent Search Nears End

As all Alexandria awaited the announcement of the hiring of a new superintendent, scheduled for tonight, the School Board released a statement just after 3:00 p.m. stating that the Board has called a special meeting for Monday, June 2, for the announcement. According to the statement, Board Chair Claire Eberwein continues contract negotiations with the Board’s chosen candidate.

Railroaded

Alexandria City Council discovered recently that while they had been hard at work on their budget, Norfolk Southern Railroad was hard at work setting up an ethanol transfer station on railroad property in the west end of Alexandria. Nearby citizens discovered the station and complained about this hazardous use appearing in their backyard.

Second New Wilson Bridge: Ready to Debut Heavy Traffic During Upcoming Switch onto New Span

While heralding a future of easier and safer travel, the debut of the second new Woodrow Wilson Bridge will come with major traffic impacts over the weekend of May 30-June 1. Switching traffic onto the new bridge requires shrinking the Capital Beltway’s Inner Loop (I-95/I-495 South) down to a single lane and closing several ramps in Maryland and Virginia. In 2006, during a nearly identical operation on the Inner Loop, motorists experienced delays of up to 90 minutes – despite 84 percent less traffic than normal, thanks to the public’s strong response to warnings to avoid the Wilson Bridge Project area.

City Displays Freedmen’s Cemetery Memorial Design Competition Finalists

The City of Alexandria will display designs from the top finalists of the Freedmen’s Cemetery Memorial Design Competition during a Community Open House held June 4 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The Open House will be held in the Sister Cities Conference Room 1101 in City Hall (301 King St.). This event will give the public an opportunity to provide comment and feedback on the overall Freedmen’s Cemetery project and design competition process. The entries will be on public display in the Vola Lawson lobby in City Hall June 4 through June 18.

Live Green, Go Yellow

Ethanol is the highly flammable, corn-based alcohol that has become the bio fuel of choice. In Virginia, the gasoline that powers most automobiles contains ten percent ethanol. However, when residents of Cameron Station and Summers Grove, two condominium complexes in Alexandria, learned that Norfolk Southern Railroad is operating an ethanol transloading facility on their Van Dorn Street property, those Alexandrians complained. On Tuesday night, the Alexandria City Council declared war on the ethanol operation, vowing to do everything possible to shut it down.
