Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that August 4-8, 2008 will be campus and school safety week in Virginia. Events throughout the week will highlight the importance of all-hazards preparedness on school and college campuses, beginning with the second annual Governor’s Campus Preparedness Conference at Virginia Commonwealth University.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Brian Moran received a perfect score on the annual League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Score Card released Monday and was recognized at an annual LCV event as a “Legislative Hero.” Moran authored initiatives to require a “Green Building” standard for state construction, tax credits to expand production of biofuels, and transportation solutions that emphasize approaches like mass transit and rail.

The first deployment of the recently announced Variable Speed Limit (VSL) will take place at approximately midnight tonight (July 30/31) as all lanes on both the Beltway’s Inner and Outer Loops (I-95 North and South) will be stopped for approximately 15 minutes between the Telegraph Road Interchange and the Eisenhower Connector to enable utility crews to replace power lines across the highway.

At a special meeting in Alexandria Wednesday night, the Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board (Board) approved a new state operating permit for Mirant’s Potomac River Generating Station (PRGS). The proposed permit allows the PRGS to begin a stack merge project that will significantly improve air quality in Alexandria while ensuring a reliable supply of electricity to meet the region’s growing demand.

My significant other and I purchased a mini van in late 1998. We are both in professions where hauling lots of stuff is important and we wanted a nice box on 4 wheels. We purchased a Chevy Astro which fit the bill and had two comfy seats up front. There was a space between the seats for Mia the cat to ride in her carrier (she likes to be up front with us). It also gets 21 miles to the gallon on the highway which is not too bad as we head over to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to our weekend house.

bdul Hameed, age 46, of Houston, Texas, was sentenced today to 212 months in prison following his conviction on May 5, 2008, on a 21-count superseding indictment charging him with conspiracy, engaging in a continuing financial crimes enterprise, mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, and credit card fraud. Chuck Rosenberg, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, made the announcement following Hameed’s sentencing before United States District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema.

Project Discovery, a college preparatory program for City youth, is recruiting volunteers to assist students with the Discovery Garden, an educational organic vegetable garden at Chinquapin Gardens adjacent to T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King St. Every Wednesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m., students hold a Garden Party where they plant, pick, prepare and eat something from the garden. Experienced gardeners are invited to join in the activities and offer tips for successful growing.
