Alexandria City Public Schools has been accepted into the Minority Student Achievement Network, a national coalition of multiracial, suburban-urban school districts that have come together to study achievement gaps that exist in their districts. Members of the network collaboratively conduct and publish research, analyze policies, and examine practices that affect the academic performance of students of color, specifically African American and Latino students.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the City of Alexandria and Arlington County are partnering to test their ability to deliver medications quickly to residents in the event of a public health emergency such as an anthrax attack or influenza pandemic.

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Human Services is currently accepting applications for the 2008-2009 Winter Fuel Assistance Program now through Friday, November 14. Financial assistance is available to eligible low-income households to help pay for the primary fuel used to heat the home. Benefits are based on household size, income and type of fuel. The income and resources of all household members must be verified by the Virginia Department of Social Services to determine eligibility and benefit level.

Effective January 1, 2009, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will be increasing fees as planned in Fee Resolution No. 2276, adopted by City Council on May 13, 2008. The resolution provided for a $5 increase in registration fees for youth sports activities fully operated by the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. Fees will increase from $20 to $25 per sport, per registrant. The Department will continue to provide scholarships to families and children to ensure all interested youth who cannot afford the fees may participate at a reduced rate or at no charge.

Lawrence Dreiband, age 68, of Alexandria, Virginia, pled guilty today to engaging in the business of dealing firearms without a license. Dana J. Boente, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Edgar A. Domenech, ATF Special Agent in Charge, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by United States District Judge Liam O’Grady.

Longtime City advocate and volunteer Elsie Virginia Tucker Thomas passed away in Arlington on Friday, October 24, 2008. The sister of Alexandria’s famed civil rights attorney, Samuel Tucker, Thomas, 88, was the former president of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association and from 1954-65 was the president of Hopkins House.
