Alexandrianews.org has selected Elizabeth Chimento and Thomas Y. “Jay” Johnson, Jr. the 2011 Alexandrians of the Year. Chimento has spent the last decade of her life advocating for environmental policies and controls to force the Potomac River Generating Station to adhere to National Air Quality and other environmental standards. Johnson has served as a volunteer firefighter in Alexandria for more than 30 years and as a member of the City’s Traffic and Parking Board for more than 20 years. Both Chimento and Johnson are dedicated to making Alexandria a better a great place to live.

2011 was a year of interesting and significant events in Alexandria We had an earthquake. The large Department of Defense Office Building in the west end (BRAC-133) opened for business. City Manager Jim Hartman resigned. GenOn announced the closing of the power plant on the waterfront. State Senator Patsy Ticer retired. Alexandria City Public Schools staggered through several crises of its own making. The budget outlook for the City became more difficult.
