On June 9, there was a Republican primary election to select their candidate to run for Congress in Virginia’s Eighth District. That day was also the deadline for independent candidates to file their petitions to run against incumbent Democrat Jim Moran.

At a special meeting today, the Alexandria Electoral Board elected Donald E. Ledwig as Secretary, Peter Newbould as Chairman, and newly appointed Bruce A. Brown as Vice-Chairman.

On Tuesday night, J. Patrick Murray defeated attorney Matthew Berry by 482 votes in the Republican primary for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District seat.

On May 13, the Northern Virginia Chambers of Commerce and the Mid-Atlantic Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted the first 8th Congressional District candidate forum at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City.

On June 8, Republicans will hold a primary election in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District to determine whether Matthew B. Berry or J. Patrick Murray will face incumbent Democratic Congressman Jim Moran in November. Moran has no Democratic challenger.

Monday night marked the beginning of a new era for the Alexandria Democratic Party. Clark Mercer, a 30-year-old City native was elected unanimously as the chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee. Julie Jakopic, who ran two successful campaigns for City Councilman Rob Krupicka and advised Delegate Charniele Herring’s campaign, was elected Deputy Chair for Finance and Administration. The election was held at the auditorium of the T. C. Williams High School Minnie Howard campus.
