During the budget deliberations last spring, City Council voted to raise the parking meter rate to $1.75 an hour. Such a raise was recommended by the retail study update as a way to increase the amount of street parking available to retail and restaurant customers. The higher rates combined with enforcement would force employees and other "long term" parkers to utilize available garage parking leaving the street spaces for shoppers and diners.

The City Council and the School Board met in June to discuss the redevelopment of the Jefferson Houston--Durant Center site. The vision offered by Dr. Morton Sherman, our Superintendent of Schools, is for a public-private partnership to redevelop the 10.3 acre site into a mixed use site that would include a new elementary school to replace Jefferson Houston and Head Start, an office block to house school administration now in rented space, public space to replace the Durant Center, and a rooftop pool and athletic field to replace the pool and field now there. In addition, the private developer would construct hundreds of thousands of square feet of office space and/or residential space for lease or for sale supported by underground parking.

A week ago, alexadrianews.org reported that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled against the City of Alexandria in the matter of the Norfolk Southern Ethanol Transloading Facility that was opened just over two years ago. The decision is hardly surprising. The federal law governing rail transportation is what it is and localities have little say.

Alexandria's Business License Tax is due on Monday, March 1. Business owners like myself are now scrambling to fill out the newer and more complex forms and to find the cash to pay the bill.

In another example of the increasing complexity of life in the 21st century, the City decided to collect a great deal more data about businesses that are licensed here.

The great snow came last weekend as predicted and Alexandria responded. In my column of last Sunday I made some observations on our city's snow removal efforts for the big storm in December. Let's see how the City handled this one.

First the City nailed King Street pedestrian crossings. When the usual snow shoveling crew appeared on Saturday afternoon to clear the handicapped ramps it looked like business as usual. Sunday afternoon, however, a pair of skid loaders worked their way up King Street clearing the intersections for easy pedestrian passage. The result was amazing.

That all changed in a heartbeat last Monday as the presence of two ineligible players was revealed. All wins were forfeited leaving the team with an 0-15 record.
