On March 16, 2013, Alexandria Rugby, Inc. will hold a fundraiser at Daniel O’Connell’s Restaurant and Bar in Old Town, Alexandria to support the Center for Alexandria’s Children. Congressman Jim Moran will be on hand to enjoy the rugby, award prizes and encourage support for the CAC. The fundraiser will coincide with the live broadcast of the RBS 6-Nations Rugby Championships.

The Center for Alexandria’s Children, a public-private partnership that serves abused and neglected children, raised a record $100,000 and honored three Alexandrians who have shown exceptional dedication and service to improving the lives of Alexandria’s children at its fourth annual Gala Benefit Thursday, Feb. 28, at Virtue Feed & Grain in Old Town.

Alexandria’s Commission for Women has announced the names of the honorees for its 33rd Annual Salute to Women Awards Banquet. Eleven women will be recognized for their accomplishments in civic life and for the improvements they have brought to the well-being of Alexandria’s women. The awards are presented for achievement in a wide range of private and governmental pursuits, including the arts, business, service to youth, public policy, health and safety, public service and civic leadership.

For seven years, The Parent Leadership Training Institute of Alexandria has been able to offer our free 20-week course on leadership and civics due to the generosity of community sponsors and individuals who support our mission. In order to continue this service, we must raise funds annually to meet our budget.

On Feb. 25, 2013, Higher Achievement middle school scholars performed at the Eighth Annual Literary Love Poetry Performance at The Lansburgh Shakespeare Theatre. The theme of the poetry was love – and the topics ranged from love of Queen Latifah, to a mother’s relentless love of her children, to football.

United Community Ministries is proud to announce that Torria Baker has been selected as the new Director of its Bryant Early Learning Center, effective Feb. 6, 2013. Baker joined the Center in May 2012 as Assistant Director and has been serving as Acting Director since October 2012.

Lewis A. Stearman has supported Alexandria’s youth for almost 75 years. His passion for serving young people developed when, as a compassionate 16-year-old, he sent Valentine’s Day cards to patients at Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.
