Noah Lyles Named USATF Athlete Of The Year

USA Track & Field today announced their 2018 Athletes of the Year. Alexandria’s own Noah Lyles was named the 2018 Jesse Owens Award winner. Lyles is a 2016 graduate of T.C. Williams High School who runs professionally for Adidas. Shelby Houlihan won the 2018 Jackie Joyner-Kersee Award.

A summary follows of the final contests in cross country, field hockey, football and volleyball during the week of Oct. 29 – Nov. 3. Highlights from last week include the regional cross country championship, regional field hockey tournament, and Homecoming. Tryouts for winter sports take place this week: Nov. 5-8.

Athletes From Six Decades Honored In Hall Of Fame

Alexandria City Public Schools inducted seven exceptional athletes into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday night, including a football player from the first graduating class of the then George Washington High School in 1935 and honored a basketball coach at GW from the 1950s.

ODBC Frosh Women Take Third At Philadelphia Regatta

Old Dominion Boat Club’s women’s freshman eight rowed to a third-place finish in one of the biggest races of the fall season, the Head of the Schuylkill. Several other ODBC boats also performed well.

Long-time Wrestling Coach Assumes Duties As Head Coach

Bishop Ireton High School has hired Kevin Spivey as the new varsity head wrestling coach. Previously, Spivey served as the assistant wrestling coach and had worked with the previous three wrestling head coaches.

Basketball Player From 1935 To Be Honored In Hall Of Fame

A basketball player from the first graduating class of the then George Washington High School in 1935 and a coach at GW from the 1950s are among those to be honored celebrated during the fifth annual ACPS Athletic Hall of Fame. Seven athletes and one coach will be recognized at an induction ceremony at T.C. Williams High School on Friday, Nov. 2.

ODBC Crew Competes In Head Of The Charles Regatta

Select boats from Old Dominion Boat Club fall crew competed last weekend in the 54th annual Head of the Charles Regatta, one of the largest regattas in the world. The ODBC women placed 27th in a field of 85 boats. Their performance assured them an automatic spot in next year’s Head of the Charles.
