Police Issue All Clear After Hammond Students Evacuated Due To Social Media Threat

Alexandria City Public Schools officials notified the Alexandria Police Department at around 10 a.m. today about a threat on social media related to Francis C. Hammond Middle School. Students were evacuated to T. C. Williams High School and police began to search the building. Police found nothing and cleared the building for students to return at around 1 p.m.

Amazon Announces Candidates For HQ2

FBI Seeks Information On Missing Fairfax County Teen

Former CIA Officer Arrested For Retaining Classified Information

January 16, 2018

A former CIA officer was arrested last night on charges of unlawful retention of national defense information. Jerry Chun Shing Lee, aka “Zhen Cheng Li”, 53, was arrested after arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York. Lee, who is a naturalized United States citizen, currently resides in Hong Kong, China.

Berlin Proposes $298.2 Million ACPS FY 2019 Combined Funds Operating Budget

Alexandria City Public Schools Interim Superintendent Lois F. Berlin last week proposed a $298.2 million Fiscal Year 2019 Combined Funds Operating Budget. This includes a $223.8 million requested City of Alexandria appropriation, an increase of $9,767,830 or 9.6% over the City’s approved FY 2018 allocation to ACPS.

DOJ Appeals DACA Injunction To Ninth Circuit, U.S. Supreme Court

January 16, 2018

The Department of Justice today filed a notice of appeal in The Regents of the University of California and Janet Napolitano v. U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Elaine Duke seeking review before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. DOJ also intends later this week to file a petition for a writ of certiorari before judgment, seeking direct review in the Supreme Court.

DHS Resumes Accepting DACA Renewal Requests

In response to a federal court order, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has resumed accepting requests to renew a grant of deferred action under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The DACA policy will be operated on the terms in place before it was rescinded on Sept. 5, 2017.

Maryland Men Convicted Of Sex Trafficking Three Minor Victims Throughout The East Coast

January 12, 2018

A federal jury convicted two Hyattsville, Maryland men of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors, including by force, fraud, or coercion, as well as sex trafficking three minors, throughout the East Coast over the course of several months in 2016. Ivan Duane Williams aka “Lucci,” 28, and Dennis Ray Davis Jr. aka “Dee,” 26, were convicted following a six-day jury trial in federal court in Alexandria.

Governor McAuliffe Announces $1.1 Million In Homeless Reduction Grants

January 12, 2018

Governor Terry McAuliffe today announced $1.1 million in Homeless Reduction Grants through the state’s Housing Trust Fund for 13 projects in Virginia. The selected projects will result in targeted efforts to reduce homelessness. Governor McAuliffe awarded grants to eight rapid rehousing projects and five projects that will provide support services in existing permanent supportive housing.
