Letter to the Editor:
As we approach the Tuesday, June 10 Democratic primary to select Rep. Jim Moran’s successor in Virginia’s 8th Congressional district, people are looking for reasons to vote for one candidate over the others. We want to send the right messages with our votes. That’s why we’re voting for State Senator Adam Ebbin.
If elected, Adam would be the first openly gay member of Congress from the South, just as he had been the only openly gay member of the Virginia legislature for nearly a dozen years. It would send the message that it is time for full equality in our nation.
Electing Adam would also send the messages that:
-- we want a certified progressive, as he’s been endorsed by the Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus;
-- we want someone who knows how to get progressive legislation passed in a hostile legislature, as Adam’s done on issues such as Medicaid expansion for pregnant immigrants, repealing the hybrid tax and, by gaining the support of the conservative Family Foundation of Virginia and liberal National Organization for Women, anti-trafficking legislation;
-- we want someone who is able to win the support of labor unions while still opposing projects that would speed up climate change, as Adam has by being endorsed by both Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 11 and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker Local 26, even though he firmly opposes the Keystone XL pipeline;
-- we want someone from the middle class to fight for the middle class on issues such as income inequality, making corporations pay the taxes they owe and consumer financial protection reform; and
-- we want someone with the courage to oppose the drug war on marijuana, as Adam has been endorsed by the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws and its state affiliate, Virginia NORML.
Help us send these messages to the rest of the nation. On Tuesday, June 10, please join us in voting for Adam Ebbin for Congress.
Paul A. Friedman
