Congressman Jim Moran, Northern Virginia Democrat, announced a slate of new cosponsors to legislation he introduced last night, the “Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act,” to ensure all federal employees receive retroactive pay for the duration of a federal government shutdown, regardless of individual furlough status. Congressman Frank Wolf is the lead Republican cosponsor.
“By bowing to extremists in their own party, the House Republican leadership is jeopardizing the paychecks of 800,000 hard working federal employees,” said Rep. Moran. “Our civil servants have weathered furloughs, frozen pay, and diminished benefits. Now they may go without their pay altogether because of this reckless Tea Party-led government shutdown.”
“Our growing list of co-sponsors is testament to the critical role these civil servants play in the lives of millions of Americans. They deserve their pay, not financial punishment,” Rep. Moran concluded.
Federal employee pay is suspended in the event of a government shutdown. Retroactive payment for “non-essential” and “essential” employees must be approved through the legislative process by Congress.
The Obama Administration estimates roughly 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed by the government shutdown. While the Washington Metropolitan Region is home to the highest concentration of federal workers in the country, 85 percent of federal workers live outside the beltway.
The list of cosponsors is now 64 strong: Reps.
